replied: Yes, you can safely bring a USA Meridian Colour and Change the base map.
I have brought in a couple now, and regularly do as i like to try different GPS's.
I am personally looking at bringing in a FX324 Colour or another Meridian Colour at the moment.
We paid about $1200 for 2 x 256mg SDCards, Antenna, Unit, Vehicle Mount, Power And Data Cable.

Steve,
Can you explain how this change to the Australian basemao is done. I would imagine that you have to buy the world wide basemap and the upload into the unit. Would you be interested in giving me the details of which retailer you used to purshase your units from. I don't want to buy from a shonk.
Thanks Mark.

I downloaded the MagUp software from Magellan, and 'found' the Australian Basemap online which i then uploaded to the GPS.
We get ours from GPS City in the US.
A collegue in the States orders them, ships them to his place, repackages and mails to us here. (he gets the $50US Rebate then.

replied: can be done by someone knowing what they're doing. i've heard Magellan here will charge you about $200-300 to do it purely because it p*isses them off. warranty should be ok, but again they could? make a fuss or make you send it back to US. remembe duties and taxes also. if it comes via postal service (ie USPS) then less than AUD$1000 value will avoid duties/taxes. if by courier ie fedex then less than AUD$250 will avoid duties taxes. otherwsie you'll pay 10% gst, 5% duty and $50 fee on top.

Caution
From experience..... there is no warranty on
GPS units
bought on ebay sites that are not authorised resellers.
I got caught with a dud and it costs over $300 for Magellan to repair if it fails (more than the cost of the original item).
I always wonder if the cheap units on ebay are seconds or end runs which are flogged off in bulk lots at auction in the states so as the manufacturer can avoid warranty obligations.
The ebay seller I bought from got his supply that way.
That's my unfortunate experience anyway.
Hope you're more fortunate
Cheers
