chescold & cigarette filters

Why? Because at caravan & camping show on weekend I was having a look at the currrent models and noticed a small white plug in where the gas hose connects. I asked the bloke at the stand what it was as my 5 year old 39L has nothing in the inlet connection. He said it was a fillter as in the same as a simple cigarette filter and is to stop particles from dodgy gas bottles, hoses etc and he even mentiond bad gas?? is there such a thing? Anyway this was at a stand where they did not specialise in anything so is he making up stuff to sound like he knows what he is on about, is it all gospel, or is the plug perhaps just for transit from new?

Cheers

That small white plug will probably be a ceramic gas filter
Dust or other contaminants in the gas block the gas jet. Most gas appliances have a filter fitted. I had to fit a filter to my Coleman stove because the regulator that came with it kept getting small particles in and blocked it.

I think it is a great idea, the old chestcolds a pretty bullet proof, the only trouble I had with mine on our around oz trip, it got dust in the gas connection while we were up the cape. A good friend fixed it for me and since then I've used a plastic cap to cover the inlet when not conected to the bottle. The chap that helped me out used one strand of a wire fishing trace to clear the jet and also soked it in white spirit beforehand.
