replied: It is a very useful gdget, use it for reversing trailer, instruction for deep rout wheel placement, gardening at backyeard..... the application is endless. And the price has dropped a lot, you can pay $98 for 2 uniden one and they are tiny (as tiny as handphone). You will not regret the $100 spent. Go for it.....

replied: These are great radios as long as you are not relying on them for transmission over more than 500m as they only have an output of .5w.
I bought one for giving to other 4x4s that dont have a radio on a trip - it works a treat. I've also adapted mine so I can use it on my trail bike. I bought the external mic/speaker and then got some bud headphones to plug into the ext mic/speaker - this setup also works well when riding with 4x4s.
I have used some of these units in the snow also - however they really dont like getting wet! - so when I got mine - I bought the optional leather case to help stop moisture and dust.
Also - the model I bought (from Dick Smith) has a built in battery charger - so I bought 3 AA recharcgable batteries and just plug it into the cigarette lighter to give it some charge. Not that I need it - they're great on batteries - can get a good 2 days or more before it needs charging!
Overall it cost me almost another $80 for the
accessories
- but I love it... its been great! Having said that - I'd love a 5w unit instead but cant find one for that price!

I have the uniden pair and they are great but have limitations for truck to truck overs as long as your not more than about 2to3 k's apart there great.generally line of sight sort of thing,..for the money a deal but remember you get what pay for.

for $130 you might as well get the 2Watt version of the uniden and $140. Nothing wrong with those little Unidens, my old 5 watter Uniden is not real fantastic compared to GME, but the little ones are excelent.

I agree with Robb, I have the GME TX610, cost about $108 from prestigecom, delivered to my door. It works brilliantly with handsfree vox capability too.
The 1 Watt power gives pretty good range over open ground but it does shorten considerably in the scrub.
Depending what you plan to use them for, the unidens may suit you better for the price but the old saying is "You only get what you pay for". If reliability and coverage is your aim, spend the extra and go the GME, if you only want to be guided over obstacles, use them car-to-car or line up the caravan, the uniden will probably be adequate.

We also have the little t(.5watt) win pack jobbies and they are good performers for what they are.
-Of course for the serious stuff we have Icom IC40s, but they are in a field all of their own!!

replied: Uppy, I have a couple of these 0.5watt models (Uniden OH36). Perfect for talking people over difficult 4x4 terrain, they work pretty well but if I had my time again, I'd choose ones that could be recharged. These things seem to have a battery life of about half an hour if the war office likes to talk like mine. I tried rechargeables in them but they only seem to last 5-10 minutes. Depends how much talking you do I suppose. You're welcome to borrow mine for a weekend if you want to see if they are value for money before you buy.

Uppy,
We have 3 of the Uniden's around here, and they are much better than I thought they would be. Judging by Uniden's 5 watt gear, that is. We can "crack" our repeater which is 30 kms away, but can usually only talk through the r'peater during cooler months. Don't use them much, and the alkaline batteries last for months.
For $100/pair, I'd buy 4. Go for it...

replied: I have 2 off the hand helds. They work fine and as you say the kids can use them when on a walk we do this.
The only thing I can recomend is buy the ones with the aa batereies and not the aaa batereirs as the aaa are harder to get out side of the cities.
Just about any store will carry AAs.
Just a few thoughts
