Intercoolers - pro's & con's

I am considering fitting an intercooler on my LC100 4.2 diesel to which has been fitted with an aftermarket Garrett turbo by TurboGlide.
The problem is I am getting conflicting stories about fitting an intercooler, including from diesel service
places
.
What I would really like to know is the advantages/disadvantages to doing this in relationship to power, economy, reliability, engine temperature etc.
Also who would you recommend to do the work.

I am missing something as to why you are being told not to?
Unless of course it relates to cost V gains

For power intercooler will always be good on the highway, but when the going gets slow, they suffer from heat soak. All the engine heat heats the Icooler, and the air inside them. So at speed, the air flow will keep it cooler, but intercooler infront of radiator, will also heat the radiator.
Front mounts suffer from stone damage, and stucks, and cars sliding into the bank
Top mount suffer from heat soak.
www.are.com.au for excellent info on intercoolers.
YMMV

They are correct in stating that.
If the intercooler is infront of the radiator, the heated air flow from the intercooler will then go straight through the radiator on the way through, which *CAN* cause the water to be warmer, thus hotter engine temps. Again slower you go the more heat, as intercoolers need air flow to keep them efficent.
Intercoolers are all a compramise.. There is no 'perfect' intercooler. They both have positive and negative's.
Wheres awill4x4, he makes IC's..

Saw a LC100 the other day with a thermo fan fitted to help out on the slow running stuff - similar fit to the 2.8tdi Patrol it has a fan under the intercooler to counter the build up of heat from the engine in the slow tough going at higher revs and lower gears.

The intercooler will make for lower engine temp therefore increse the engine life.
Talk to
Cooma Diesel
on 02 62800178. They are the experts to talk to re Toyota, diesel and turbo charging.
Another point when considering front or top mount intercooler is that Toyota uses front mount on all their factory intercooled turbos.

Sorry jamcage, but check out the Prado
turbo diesel
, it has a top mounted intercooler with a neat air feed from a double skinned bonnet feeding air from the leading edge of the bonnet.
