aerial.... AM AND FM

I travel far and wide. Poor reception. Can anyone recommend a high-gain aerial. Not CB! just radio... or are all aerials the same. Autobarn couldn't help much. A $20 one with a bit of copper wound around a part of its length, claims to be high gain..... Cheers Royce

Hi Royce,

Have a look at the Mobile One web site (http://www.mobileone.com.au/mainantenna.htm)

Check out GME stuff as well.

I've got an AM/FM aerial from GME on the bull bar thats a CB lookalike - reception has improved markedly. And it doesn't break in the scrub.

To state the obvious different radios make a difference. When I had a look last year Pioneer were best for FM, but among the worst for AM. Sony had the best AM, thats what I went with.

Royce......I have done some homework on this recently.....there is a huge difference in the wavelength for the AM and FM stations
around OZ, so any aerial you use is a huge compromise! I have had news radio problems with my new car (Jackaroo Diesel - Eurovox unit within) - have fixed it by rigging an aux aerial system, for the outback. Made a bracket for the spare wheel, and connected a 9 gain electrophone (the 3 piece modular unit), via some good quality coax (like used for CB) right to the back of the radio - vast improvement on reception quality. Some manufacturers need dragging through the bush - a car marketed as the solution for all outback trips, but when you get there, you can't receive anything. Cheerz....Darian

For both AM and FM broadcast, I've found the Mobile One antenna that looks like a cut down 27 MHz, works quiet well.

I take two antennas. A VHF stainless whip for AM, and a cutdown VHF stainless whip for FM (about 70-75 cm matches 100 MHz 1/4 wave).
I can listen to 4TO Townsville from Cairns (350km away).

I've also been told the short scanner antennas work great for FM coz they are close to 1/4 wave and are braided (more wire in the air - good for reception, not as good for CB), but no good for AM.

OE radios on cruisers and Prados are great! Listened to 3LO Melbourne all the way to Cooabarabran!
