Tyres for Disco

Hi, could someone reccomend the best all round tyre for a landrover Discovery please (1997 SE7 TDI). We do alot of Hwy driving however love our camping trips etc on the beach (less common out bush) & general beach driving to go fishing. Any recommendation greatly appreciated. Currently have Michelin 235/70 R16 XpC (all terrain) on rear & BF Goodrich on Front. Just had to quote to replace one of the rear tyres that a gouge was found in & nearly had heart failure at the price.

take a look at my thread just below yours - I have a LR Disco V8 with 245/70 R16 Bridgestone Dueler A/T 694's - couldn't be happier and I got them for $210 per tyre F&B.

best all-round A/T tyre i've ever come across. you can stick with the 235/70, but trust me the 245/70 gives a tad better performance off-road, and only puts the speedo out by about 1.7%, so at 100kmh you're doing 101.7kmh.

We did used to have Bridgestone A/T on our previous vehicle (4runner) & were quite happy with them on that but unfortunately didn't have them for long before selling.

We may have to stick with the 235 however as at this stage we only need the spare & will then get the rest to match when these wear out as they are only a year or two old from the previous owner. Thanks again. This is a great resource.

I shopped around for months before buying new skins for my 97 TDI. I ended up with Cooper S/T 235/70 16 & have been happy with them & only one puncture on the old Ghan track to date (35000km). They might be a bit of an overkill for mainly road use but I have not noticed any real disadvantage on the road other than slight increase in road noise. I was also pleased with the stock Michelins but they were pretty chewed up when I replaced them after quite a bit of gravel roads, they were more pricy than the Coopers too from memory. BFG's have a good reputation also & my buddy is happy with his after 40,000km of mixed driving.

I have a 98 Tdi manual set up for expedition type touring (OX winch, Konis, King Springs, Engel, etc, etc). Replaced my original Michelins at 40,000km as they were pretty well shot. Ok round town but couldn't hack the gibber roads. Did a lot of research as to available options and also the cost involved. Finally settled on BFG 225/75 AT KOs due to the increased load rating. Also, replacement Michelins were around $280 ea whereas the BFGs were $210 ea. Now have 60,000 on the BFGs and have given them a fair work out (Cape York, Simpson etc) with an all up weight of around 2,900kg on the big trips. I have the usual range of tread chips and small cuts/splits etc (not surprising in terms of where I have been). They are an excellent value tyre and great on and off road. My GPS and highway radar confirms that there are no speedo worries: my speedo says 100k/ph and the radar/gps says 97 kph. I run the BFGs at 36psi all round when unloaded.

Got 5 Standard Michellins about 40, 50% tread 235/65/16 $100 for all 5 if it's any help, not realy an AT tyre but they are there if you like depending were you are of course, I am in Mildura.
I run 265/65/16 on my TD5 Goodyear Wrangler MTR about $320ea

Looks like we'll probably go with the Bridgestone Duelers & for now we'll just replace the spare that's bung, then the back two Michelins as they need it & then the newer BFG on the front will be last & we'll end up with all new matching Bridgestone down the track (probably be due to upgrade the car by then :-)

I have a 97 SE Disco I have OME Coils & Shocks and run Cooper ST 245/75 16 I live in the Territory and they have had a good run on both dirt and tar have found them fantastic have not had a punture (touch wood) I do take care with pressures and regular balancing. The OME set up has allowed me to run the bigger tyre and they have barely worn with over 40,000 kms. They are noiser than the michelin as expected but a good stereo helps but nowhere as bad as muddies. These are priced around the same as the BFG maybe a few dollars more per tyre, this was when I bought them.
