Land Cruser 100 1HZ

I bought the Cruser with 47k on the clock. I have noticed a ticking sound coming from the engine, it sounds like a tappit but it dosnt have any and the sound is coming from the crank-clutch area. The sound is not constant and tends to disapear after a 100kmh run. It's worst around town at 60kmh on short runs where the engine dosnt warm right up. Also the cluch shudders while engaging when cold. A workshop manager for CMI Toyota in SA said this was normal for a Land Cruser with a 1HZ Diesal. The car is still under new car warinty. Any info on these probs. would be great.

replied: I know two people with late model 1HZ Landcruisers and they have both had endless problems with clutch shudder. The problem seems to be the asbestos free clutch that is used. One of them had the clutch plate refaced with asbestos material and that fixed the problem. Simon

Thank's Simon, I had the ingectors, compression and valve clearance checked to-day. The only thing that was out were the valve clearance (to tight). Toyota will re-shim them next week. I hope this is the ticking noise. I will let you know.

Anyone who rebuilds clutches can do this. They just replace the material on the clutch plate. I suggest you look in the Yellow Pages, but if you can't find anyone in you area, let me know and I will give you the names of some people in Brisbane. You can email me on scevans@powerup.com.au.

replied: the 100 series, yes ours with only 70k has and still has shudder clutch, the boys at toyota said this is normal, but this goes away after the truck gets warm. we have had big problems with the fuel pump and injectors and it took toyota 3 goes to get it right. we are just waiting for our fuel figures to come together to see if the problem has been fixed. do you have any idea how many kms in both tanks you get. ???

replied: G'day Brett, I have a '95 model, 75 series diesel troopy with a 1HZ engine and have had the same occasional "ticking" noise comming from the rear of the engine, mainly during idling and sometimes during low speed. I've had the vehicle since new and have 65,000km up on it - the ticking noise began to raise its annoying head at about 45,000km. I had a toyota dealership in Sydney check it out and they didn't know what the cause was and put it down to the characteristics of the engine. I have now moved to Melbourne and had my local dealership here check it out only 3 weeks ago. They said it was nothing to worry about as it seems to be a common annoyance with these engines and suggest it is possibly oil in the bearings getting " trapped " and being squirted out under high pressure and causing a "cracking" and "ticking" noise. They may be right or at least on the right track, because after I have done an oil change (Shell rimula X), the noise disappears for some time and then eventually comes back, even after a long run before comming to an idle again. Oh well, guess we'll just have to put up with it until an answer comes along - maybe a different oil will do the trick! As for the clutch shudder, yes, I had the same problem and replaced the kit (genuine) at only 40 000km and the problem disappeared and currently only have a slight shudder in reverse on steep inclines. Hope this is of some relief to you . Wayne

Thanks Wayne, it is a relief, it is booked in to have a 50k survice and valve shims done next wednesday, I'll let you know how it goes.

replied: I have had my diesel RV 100 since new June '98 and have travelled 98 000 kms. Don't ask me about the clutch. Althought it is well over a year out of warranty Toyota recently put the fourth clutch kit in to "try" and eliminate that shudder. It only happens when it's cold and in the lower gears ie. first and reverse really show it up. The only other genuine problem I've had was an o-ring leaking in the power steer pump. Love LC's and am upgrading to the new model revision TD 100 and will hopefully escape that bloody clutch.
