Arc welders?

Has anyone bought one of the $100 units that seem to be everywhere at the moment (SuperCheap, Mitre 10, Repco etc) and what has been the verdict? Any information welcome. Yes I realise that for $100 one will not get great quality but for the odd spot of welding I'm guessing they should be OK.

replied: I've bought one of the GMC $99 dollar jobs, and spent approx another $30 on Mask, hammer & sticks. It seems to work OK, I managed to weld bits of steel together, but this is also my first go at welding, so I think there may be more deficinency in the operator rather than the machine.

Maybe not.
I did in the past have the use of a top of the line arc welder, I now have an el chepo GMC.
My welding is still very bad, just like is always was

replied: I thought these cheap welders were only 60amps, instead of the usual 120/140amps. So may be a bit limited on heavier steel.

That may well be true. The other important fact is that they will no doubt be low duty cycle.
