80 criser cooling

Hi All, On a recent trip from Qld to Vic towing a camper trailer I had sever heating problems. However I was able to get from Goulburn to Melborne where I replaced the water pump and put in a new radiator (found out the rad was stffed when I pulled it out to get to the water pump). Now the old girl will run fine except for when I first start out. She gets very hot but when I stop on the side of the road the temp comes back down and will then stay at 1/2 way on the gauge for the rest of the day, no matter how hard I push it. The C.T weights in around the 1.1 ton mark fully loaded and I only ever experience the heating problems when I was towing. before this trip she ran at the 1/2 way mark all day no matter how hard I was pushing it either on road or off. Since replacing these parts I get a heating problem no matter if I am towing or not. The only things that wasn't replaced new in the cooling system is the thermostat and rad.cap. With the diffecultly in getting to the termostat I was after some opions before I start pulling things apart. My 80 series runs a 4.2 with DTS turbo and intercooler running 16 psi boost. Also I have heard from different sorces that the 80 series do seem to have problems with the gauges being accurate, do people know if this is true or not.

Not sure about the gauges not reading right but my 80 Series with aftermarket DTS turbo sits on 1/2 way whether towing or not. I just replaced my radiator a couple of months ago and it still reads the same.

When you changed your radiator did you give the block a good clean out and flush and replace the hoses. Other than that it might be the thermostat playing up - as you suggested. My advice would be to take it to a cooling specialist and have them look at it.

If it overheats initially but is then OK I would suspect the Thermostat above all else.

I would say it points to thermostat,But if you put a new radiator and water pump in you should have flushed the cooling system and would have had to take out the themostat to flush it .If it hasnt been flushed could be coolants not been compatable.

Hi Chucky,

I had a problem years ago with my 1HZ 80 series overheating. Flushed, cleaned, replaced hoses and still got hot. Finally replaced the thermostat and was instantly fixed!!! Never had an overheating problem again.

Thank yo to everyone for your help, I am going to replace the thermostat and see how things go from there, I will also replace the rad. cap just so everything is new and take things from there. I let you know how things go.

Check your fan clutch. Ive had overheating problems before & went through the same process as you.
Once the fan clutch had been topped up with some type of silicone (i think) soloution- no more problems.

As stupid as this may sound, i had an overheating problem in my 2000 TD Jackaroo for 1.5 yrs (only on long trips when ambient temp was high). It took a ford dealership to find that the wrong radiator was fitted. Holden had no idea. I refuse to take the jack to holden - no idea (perth anyway).

heating problems can be a pain , I fitted a twin thermo fan kit to my 80 series after a rad / water pump swap when I first bought it 2 years ago and did the old over the left shoulder thing with the viscous fan which was knackered too .
We have done trips to the gibb ,back of marble bar,esperance and lot's of sand driving around Lanno's and two rocks and it doesn't move of 1/2 on the gauge .the gauge is just a general guide gauge but every toyota I have come across sits around the half or just under the half spot while at normal operating temps.
