Anyone put an aftermarket exhaust on a 3.0L GU Patrol?
Submitted: Thursday, Dec 02, 2004 at 18:30

Just wondering what changes (if any) you have experienced with any after market exhausts on the mighty 3.0l GU.
What size?
What benefits?
What negatives?
Thanks in advance.

Did you just put on the 3 inch and do nothing else? Is it connected to the original dump pipe?
Seems to be quite a bit of discussion on this topic with several members doing simple mods like yours, right through to new turbo impellors and housings, new dump pipes, increased boost etc.
I'd like to improve the power of my 4.2TD and dont mind spending the money, as long as it works.

did my 4.2 patrol at stage 2 IE. mandrel bent exhaust pump and turbo opened up & the increase was 162nm, plus 18kw. This at the wheels on dyno. Made a big difference in driving and towing.
The 3ltr can be tickled even better upgrade chip (ditronics or similar) turbo worked and mandrel bent exhaust. There are many people in each city that can do this do a google
search
and find them.
Carefull if you have a auto the box might not like it.

side note;-
dtronic or similar?,
though there is other things on the market, that make more grunt, none are similar to the dtronic, as the dtronic adjusts timing, as well as fuel, where as any other brand currently is no different to winding up the fuel screw on an old style pump...
Dtronic also changes what the ecu see's from the engine, and can actually help save your engine if water temp goes high [ monitoring combustion temps as water temp changes very quickly] by pulling fuel back beyond factory settings if required, by changing what the ecu see's.
Most other types change what the engine see's from the ecu, so it just keeps adding more fuel to try and make more grunt regardless of what the ecu is seeing, bit like winding up the fuel screw on the older type pumps....

I recently upgraded the complete system on my 3.0l auto. I bought a kit from
Beaudesert
Exhaust Centre in S E Qld. It is a 2 3/4 in. mandrel bend setup from the turbo right through. They increase the size of the catalytic converter and use a free flow muffler and eliminate the small resonater behind the rear axle. Took me about two hours to remove the old system and fit the new one.
The benefits : Motor runs more freely, pulls better on hills, turbo spools up at lower revs. Marginal improvement in fuel consumption. At highway speed it hardly seems to be working at all
Negatives: None that I can see. exhaust noise is no different to the standard system.
I also have a Dtronic fitted which made a big improvement, and the larger exhaust is the icing on the cake.
I also fitted a pyro at the same time to monitor exhaust temps.

Hi Hoffy,
I am interested in your setup. I already have the Dtronic and am happy with overall power, but would still like more bottom end power.
How did the exhaust repalcement affect the bottom end power?
If it took 2 hours to fit, assume no major problems or other difficulties doing the job yourself?
What was the cost to buy (not fitted)?
Is the pyro fitting standard on the system, or do you have to order it as an extra?
Now that you have done the change, would you recommend it or is it not worth the expense in your opinion?
Thanks for any answers
Cheers

Well worth the cost especially if you do any serious towing. From memory the new system was around $850. The fitting was a breeze- everything supplied and bent perfectly - looks just like the original only bigger.
The pyro was not included. I asked
Beaudesert
Exhaust to weld a fitting into the new pipe and then fitted a pyro supplied by Ian from
Thermoguard
. This is a very sensitive unit and I am amazed how quickly the exhaust temps change with increased or decreased accleration.
Very handy when towing.
Hope this helps.
Cheers.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that bottom end power is better although if yours is a manual I think you would notice a much better response. The auto tends to mask the bottom end lag pretty well.
Cheers.

I am Just out of warranty so it would not be an issue with me. As I understand it Nissan would have to prove that the modification was the cause of any problem that might arise.
Cheers.
