4Runner with Idle problem
Submitted: Friday, Dec 03, 2004 at 07:29
Tony N. (VIC)
Hi
My neighbour has a 93 model 4runner RV6 that has a problem with idling too fast. V6 Petrol Manual.
He has adjusted the fuel mixture and the idle stop but he has only been able to get it down to approx 1400 rpm was 2000 rpm.
This all happened after we went for a little drive off road. Prior to going we changed the heater hoses at the back of the engine but it ran fine.
He has changed his air flow sensor as we thought it might have been dirty (he broke it trying to get it out to clean it).
Engine runs fine, no miss, power fine etc.
Any ideas of what to look at next.
TIA
Tony N.

replied: Don't know much about them but I'd guess it has an automatic choke.Could be the thingy that controls this.(sorry carnt think of it right name)
Other than that could be a cracked air line on the polution gear, they have a habit of Idling up a vehicle.

replied: Word of warning-don't touch the trottle stop screw. You need to put it back to correct setting of 1/2 a turn from when the screw touches the throttle lever. It needs this so the throttle position sensor is correct for the computor to know were idle is.For it to be idling high, possibilities are;fast idle unit faulty or the heater hoses to the unit are blocked(toyota's are very hard to get to,normaly underneath throttle body);idle control motor or system faulty.Basicly something is letting to much air to by-pass the throttle plate. As you have change the heater hoses, make sure they are on the correct way and make sure you didn't knock anything off at the back of the motor.Because the engine management system uses an air flow meter, any air leaks such as the brakebooster hose or a vacuum hose should make the idle rough if it still runs at all.If you can't rectify the problem, see a good mechanic,we are out there beleive it or not. GOOD LUCK

Agreed I would disnonnect the Iav's {fast idle unit} and rest the idle. to do this make sure the air con is turned off and the motor is warm. clean the Iav unit and or replace is its stuffed.
reset the computer then reconnect up the Iav . check the TPS voltage as well.

replied: I would say you have a vacume leak . When you did the heater hose , you either broke a plastic vacime pod , or knocked a hose off .
