Wheel bearing seals and water
Submitted: Tuesday, Feb 01, 2005 at 13:58
Leroy
Hi all,
Had to back the Patrol right into the water above axel height the other day because of such a shallow boat ramp (don't get excited....it was fresh water) to get enough water between the boat and the trailer.
Prob only drove 500m to ramp so bugger all heat in the bearings/hubs. I can't see any probs sitting in the water while I launch or bring the boat in. Seals should keep all water out.
Any comments?
Leroy

Wat's the difference between what you did and the normal creek / river crossing except in your case the bearings would be cool.

I'm normally passing through not sitting in the water for 10 minutes. Some people were looking at me in horror....I personally didn't have a problem with it and especially since there were no hot bearings involved.

replied: Leroy are we talking back or front? I cant remember off hand, but does your patrol have fully floating rear axles? If not then the bearings are on the axle and there is nothing in your 'hubs'. I have never had the seals on the rear of any of my 4bys ingress with water, then again, never had the front either. Done plenty of river crossings and boats out at ramps etc.
I do service my own trucks and do the wheel bearings but I still dont see what you did as a huge potential problem. In saying that, how old are the seals, when were your bearings last repacked etc, old seals will leak eventually.
If it hasnt been awhile (last two years) then I guess this is as good time as any to get them repacked and ease your mind, better safe than sorry!
Matt.
