hi there
I am thinking of putting extractors on my 2004 nissan navara 3.2 diesel
(no-turbo).I noticed when climbing steep hill/ underload/ it struggles to get up.
Can anyone tell me the pros/ cons ,as i have heard that extractors give you more torque down low. as i dont want to put a torbo on. due to past experience with them, would this the go
much appreciated

replied: Leon, don't stop at a set of extractors. If you can, get a complete new exhaust with a "hi flow" muffler fitted. It WILL make a difference.

replied: Extractors... To me they dont do squat on some cars. My GQ they did 0 and that was $700 down the poochute.
I think most people will tell you they are wonderful, since they have dished out $100s on them and dont want to admit they do nothing!
What was your 'bad' experience with a turbo? Having been in Denco Diesels own ute, it pulled VERY well..
Good luck.

I second Muzzgit's reply get the extractors, plus exhaust, plus muffler. Son's Hilux, now dearly departed, not unbreakable, was changed to extractors, exhaust (less bends) and a sports muffler by Glenroy exhausts Vic, made aslot of difference to its drivability and used less fuel. Used to struggle at 95, after work happy to cruise at 110.

replied: Hi Leon,
Gotta agree with Muzzgit here too, I put extractors and 2 1/2" system on my 80 series 1HZ (4.2 diesel) and it made a big difference. There was a recent writeup in a 4X4 mag where there was something like a 15% increase in power for a 1HZ after extractors where fitted, cannot argue with a back to back comparison with a dyno.
Cheers

Captain,
Do you think if you put in an aftermarket turbo on the 1hz motor, fitting extractors would make a difference or would it be a compolete waste of money
Thanks

Hi Don,
Are you asking whether to fit extractors OR a turbo? You cannot fit extractors to a turbo.
I looked into fitting a turbo before I put the extractors on. However I found that it reduced vehicle reliability, particualrly if you wound up the boost. Basically the 1HZ is not an ideal motor to turbo for many reasons and if you do, you need to be conservative with boost to maintain reliability.
Hence I ended up choosing extractors as they have no real effect on reliability, but missed out on big power gains. Finally ended up getting the GU 3.0TD and an VERY happy, more power than you can poke a stick at!!!
Cheers

G'day mate, I put extractors on my GQ, sounds great, make a difference? nah probably not. Be careful how big a system you go with coz I think that will affect back pressure and i think reduces the engine breaking in Petrol motors at least, dont know if that affects diesels the same way?

replied: I have put extractors on two of my forby's. Didn't notice much difference on the first (FJ45) cos I left the standard exhaust as it was. Second time around (FJ62) I had the whole system changed to a two and a quarter inch with quality extractors and was very happy with the difference it made.
Going to an exhaust of a really big diameter can actually have a negetive impact, and my brother can attest to this.
He was advised to go to a two and three quarter inch system with extractors on his HJ62, not only did the dyno result come back as same torque but less power, his fuel consumption also went up !!
We know this, cos on that day he couldn't wait around for them to change things, he had to go to work and wouldn't be back in town for two weeks. When he went back, they farted around with more exhauasts, more dyno runs, same results. In the end he paid them nothing, went elsewhere, had a smaller exhaust put on with better results.
The original bunch were stubbornly saying the only option was BIG BIG BIG.
