Frontera Owners - Safety Recall
Submitted: Wednesday, Feb 02, 2005 at 05:18

I finally took the Frontera in for the Safety Recall check yesterday and it passed with flying colours. What got me thinking though was the service guy's comment that NONE of the vehicles they'd seen had a problem. That got cynical me wondering a couple of things such as how widespread does a problem need to be before a safety recall is issued?, how good is this dealership in actually checking for the problem? and how much does the dealership know about the problem?
I recognise that Fronteras aren't exactly as common as backsides but I'm talking about the
Gold Coast
and there are quite a few around.
Did anybody out there actually have the recall problem when tested? I'd be interested to hear.
Cheers.

replied: The wife's frontera had a problem but it was fixed by the next day.
Feels no different than before it went in, they say no damage was caused before hand and it was in no danger of failing anyway. I couldn't see anything wrong when I checked it out before it went in and I couldn't tell any difference when we got back.
It's fixed the wife's happy and if she's happy then so am I.
cheers

Moz
replied: Paul,
Depends on the type of problem.
The problem concerned a linkage in the steering column,
which if a failure occurred would lead to complete loss of steering!
Pretty serious problem!
Which rightly needs to be the subject of a safety recall.
I have seen two vehicles that needed attention for the recall but all
the others (about 20 or 30) were fine.
I would guess there may have been only 1 or 2 vehicles nationwide
that had a complete failure which instigated the recall.
I remember about 10 years ago when thousands of Commodores were
recalled to modify the transmission breather because 2 separate cars caught fire
when their trans overheated and poured oil onto the exhaust and ignited.
Pretty serious problem!!
However you are right when you say the dealerships don't know much around
the problem. They are given the specifics of the service item and what parameters
to check. No whys or wherefores given.
Recalls are very specific and are usually straight-forward to check.
Cheers Moz

Yeah, I understand what you're saying Moz. Better to be safe than sorry. The blank looks from the boys in the dealership are a bit of a worry though but it's not their fault I know.
Muchos gracias for your response.
Cheers.

Hi Guys
Both Myself a nd my father have frontera's mine a "99 and I am pretty sure my fathers is a 2001. It failed at the recall apparently the dealer was only told to check for the fault and they were not given any instruction how to fix which put them into a spin for a day.
Any way alls well.
