Buying a 4wd on a budget

Submitted: Sunday, Apr 29, 2001 at 00:00

Scott

My partner and I are off around Oz in 6 months and are on a budget. Were looking at spending around $9000 on a 2nd hand 4wd. We both really like the 1985-1990 Pajeros manual 5speeds. Im wondering if people could relate their experiences with these vehicles;trouble etc. Am looking at towing a Jayco Eagle camper trailer with it. Also, am looking for peoples experiences in regards to obtaining work on the way, grapepicking etc. Were both a little daunted about setting up etc, but also realy want to do this. Hope thats not too many questions:-)
Thanks, Scott

Steer clear of the early 4 cylinder Pajeros, as they have very weak gear boxes. My dad went through 3 gear boxes in 4 years in his.

$9000 is not a lot of money to purchase and set up a vehicle. You would probably be better stretching to about $14000. For that you can get a good GQ wagon, which will be a lot better than the Pajero.

Id suggest looking for a MQ Patrol Wagon in good condition. They are quite a good vehicle despite their age, and sell for between $6000-$12000

Suggest you buy a diesel probably a lot less trouble-if any and likely to be more economical. Diesel is available throughout the Bush more so than petrol
