replied: wow, i think there is only one worse petrol guzzler out there (petrol landcruiser). I can give you some non-towing figures. We go 100kms on 20litres of petrol in the city and 19 litres in the country and 29litres in sand. Our friends discovery turbo diesel 2 point something litre manages 10litres per 100km and does everything we can do and goes further. Well thats the figures he gives me anyway.

replied: I have a 4500 1998 Petrol, and knew that consumption would be an issue when I purchased it.
Now "Shirl" has done 70,000 km, so it's "settled". Best advice: Speed = thirst. Don't drive over 110 kph unless you have shares in BP.
Last week did Adelaide -
Googs Track
-
Gawler Ranges
-Adelaide. 2000 km. Averaged 19 litres/100 km. Weight was 3.2 tonne at commencement of
Googs track
- full of water, fuel, supplies etc. On that section got about 21 L/100km.
On the black top highway at 105 kph (by the GPS), and using the cruise control, got 17 L/100Km.
"Shirl" has a roofrack with a canvas bag on top with swags etc inside. This gobbles fuel c.f. no roof rack.
Hope that helps.

Rod, you aked about info for the
Gawler Ranges
. A recent couple of editions of one of the 4wding mags(can't recall which one: maybe 4 x 4) had articles that were useful.
The RAA of South Aus has an excellent book by Stuart Nicol called "Outback" - this is the best reference I've seen. The Westprint
Googs Track
map is very informative. Try the National Parks & Wildlife at their Ceduna office - there is a new park around Paney in the southern part of that region.
I posted a trip report on the yahoo groups' 4wd _out_of_Adelaidelast week. Cheers. Rick.

Unless you own a fuel company I'd suggest the 4.2l D is a much better option for both off road and economy.

700km, Petrol Patrol 180 litres, Petrol Prado 118litres, Diesel Cruiser and Disco both less than 100litres. All vehicles were similarly loaded and travelled at same speeds. In 3 words .... very, very thirsty!!

Rick
replied: Yes the 4500 is thirsty. But consider:lower purchase price; reduced costs with half the frequency of oil changes and filters, etc. It takes a loooong time to recoup those extra costs, as would for a gas conversion.
And the 4500 petrol is a torquey number - i.e. it is very easy to drive in most conditions. So I am very happy with it, and driven steadily it's OK on fuel. At the time of my purchase, the 3.0 L diesel was years away. The diesel option was the rubber band known as the 2.8 turbo. If I was buying today/this week I'd find it very hard to go past the 3.0L diesel. But I bought 4 years, ago and although it was my umpteenth 4wd, it was my first NEW 4wd. I still think it's a great unit. So i would not discount the notion of a petrol . They certainly are priced right to get into a top 2nd hand unit for $ 30 K. Cheers. Rick

Absolutely spot on! The only thing better than a petrol Patrol is a Petrol LandCruiser ;-) BTW, have you checked out rebuild prices on Diesels lately? CYAs
