Fitting HF to Prado

I'm keen to fit both HF and UHF radio's to my TD Prado and was wondering where others have located them. Will a small UHF may fit in the ash tray ?? What about the placment of the HF transceiver and remote head.....I have no Milford cage to mount it on but would like to mount the transceiver as high as possible.

Also I will be keen to fit the HF A/T antenna to the spare wheel carrier on the rear of the Prado.

Any suggestions about what has worked best for others ?

Duffa, I stuck the spikey side of velcro to the bottom of my UHF cradle and it sticks to the carpet on the side of the transmission tunnel just in front of the seat so it sits just below my left knee. It's easy to see and operate and you can hide it if necessary. With the HF, you can buy wheel carrier mounts for your antenna. If you take off the side lineing in the rear luggage compartment you can probably fit the radio between the lineing and the mudguard.Then you run a line to the head which I mounted on a bracket velcroed to the passenger side of the transmission tunnel. I've done this in a Landcruiser but it should work in a Prado. Good luck! Mal Try.

Hi Duffa, I reckon Mal's idea with the valcro is great. We're pondering the same thing with our GU Patrol. There's just no where to mount an in-dash UHF or HF and we hate the thought of drilling holes in the side of the consol or dash. Have you considered a remote head UHF unit. We've been looking at the GME TX3400 and the Uniden UH013. Melissa

On the corresponding spot opposite the handbrake is where i have seen a uhf installed - very nice spot, and takes up no space. that way the screen sits flush to the console.

Thanks for the tip. I can see what you're saying but it would have to be a very slimline unit to fit. Space is only 30mm wide, but well worth considering. Now that just leaves finding space for a HF radio...Melissa

I fitted a uniden UHF/AM CB in the little bin at the bottom of the dash. It is held in with double sided tape, and I haven't had a problem, even after completing a trip around Australia, no matter how bad the corregations got.

I've put a GME TX4400 (great radio and top of their range by the way) in the dip in front of the gear shifts. I fixed a piece of wood permanently to the bottom of the bracket to give it some extra height, brought the aerial and power leads through the box below the ash tray and used velcro dots to hold the radio in place. It's in a perfect place - easy to see and operate and easily removed for security.

just did the same thing in my new pajero. bought consol from department of interior that takes both heads. looks great. hf installed under passanger seat. unedin behind glove box. purchased aerial bracket from 4 wheel drive storage and the bracket fits behind the spare.

I have my Codan 9323 head fitted into a Dept of the Interior dash pod on the prado and a Kaymar bracket on the spare wheel for the autotune aerial. The radio itself is mounted onto the front of the drawers.
