Pajero NM Clunk

Hi All

I have a 2002 Pajero NM (60,000 Km) that has a severe "clunk", backlash in drivetrain, when going from off throttle to on throttle. Mitsubishi has informed me that this is a common problem with this model Pajero and, even though they have tried, no solution is available at this time. Mitsubishi has advised their dealers not to try to rectify the problem.
Has anybody else here encountered this problem, if so were they offered a fix, also has anybody noticed any adverse wear or damage attributed to this drivetrain backlash?

Brian, go to the Pajero Club forum and ask there. You'll find that it's a common occurence.

Had the same problem with my 2001 NM 3.5L Petrol. Dealer tried all sorts of thiings. Changed diff centre, drive rods etc etc. Improved it a little but did not go completely. It was no worse when I sold it at 120,000 kms. If it really annoys you switch to 4H. You'll find that once the front wheels are driving the backlash goes away.

Others on the pajeroclub report similar problems with the NM although it doesn't seem to be too common.
One person repoted it with his NP but not sure how bad it is.
Does your backlash go when in 4H

When my wife packs the van it weighs in at about 1900 kg with a ball weight of about 220 kg. We also carry a a 40 L Engel fridge and all our camping gear in the car for when we leave the van and go into those more inaccessible places. I have HD springs in the back and Bilstein Shocks all round. I use a Hayman Reese Weight Distribution Hitch with a trg coupling on the van.

I also remove both rear seats and the third row seat, as it is only the two of us that travel.

I normally travel at a maximum speed of about 90 kph by choice, but the car will go up to 110 kph on the freeways with the van on and steady as rock. Fuel consumption is all over the place with the van on. Worst was about 19 L/100 Km best about 15 L/100 km. Depends on roads, ambient temperature and type of terrain. I've been over some pretty roug and hot tracks.

I had a major overheating problem the SECOND time I towed the van. With about 17,000 kms on the clock, I went out through Penrith and up over the Blue Mountains without a problem. Climbing out of Lithgow on the road to Bathurst the car overheated. To cut a long story short the problem was traced to the coolant (factory installed) "gelling" and blocking half the radiatorcores. Mitsubishi Motors have not acknowledge this as a known falt but anecdotally a number of NMs and NPs have had the same problem.

I've had the problem fixed and can generally say that I'm very, very happy with the NP 3.2 L Di-D as a tow vehichle, off-road 4WD and a town and highway car.

Ive got 110,000KM on the clock on my 2001 NM Petrol and noticed it at about 50,000KM and it hasn't got any worse. I reported it on the Vic Pajero club site as did a few others. I've learn't live with it but am just about to trade in for the Did.

I don't know if this helps, but some Jackaroos have a bit of a clunk in the driveline.

It comes from the slip joint on the 2 piece tailshaft. When it is dry of grease, it clunks. The trick is to make sure the joint is full of grease and there is a grease nipple for this.

Might be worth looking on the Paj to see if there is something similar there.
