I have an 82 model camper trailer with a 3 way fridge that is not working the best. Can I replace the 3 way with a standard bar fridge or do I need to replace it with something similar. We only ever hook the fridge up to 240 volts.
Thanks

Cookie,

My in-laws recently replaced their coleman 3 way fridge in their caravan with a 240V bar fridge. Like you they only ever hook up to 240V so the only thing they really have to worry about is when the fridge is off whilst in transit. But they don't really travel more than 400km's between stops so they just make sure the fridge is nice and cold before they unplug it and everything pretty much stays cold enough. In their case, the 3 way was working perfectly, they just didn't want to be bothered with having to level it off and change over the power source etc. I must admit I think they're solution is a little short sighted though as they may regret this decision if they ever get a little more adventurous and head further afield.

2 alternative to keep things cold while traveling

get a good inverter to drive the 240 v while in transit and check with good suppliers first before parting with your money making sure they provide the right sized unit.

Get someone to rip out the 240v compressor and replace with 12volt Danfoss

Both costly excersises , especially the latter.
