i can honestly tell you that the more miles you do the better the economy will get.
we own a 3.otdi as well and have just clicked over 17,000 km's in it since the end of april.the first 5,000 we averaged about 12.5lts/100km.
as soonas we hit that mark we threw a jayco swan camper behind it and went to monkey mia and carnarvon for a week, (had to see how it went as a fourbie ie the ruff stuff...:) ).any way for the round trip of 2,500 kms we used roughly 200lts diesel. (there was a fair bit of low range work in there as well).
after the 10,000 service the economy picked up remarkedly and we average around 1,475km from the 120 lts we carry.
and nissan has told us it should get a bit better than that.

My father has one of these vehicles and consistantly gets 10km/litre (unloaded), has travelled around Aust with 6 metre van in tow, boat on roof etc and economy varied (naturally) but worst he found was 7-8 km/ litre while heading into 40 odd knott head winds for some distance. That was at about the 10K point as well, now has 50 k on clock and I'd have to check if there has been much change. On his way back from Kurumba now I believe.

Generally mate, Dad has been fairly happy with the 3 litres power and performance, conceding too that towing the van and the boat on top and the back of the wagon packed with gear he didn't really expect to pull like a rocket up hills. He finds that most mountains typically slow thing a bit but finds the vehicle generally adequate. At this stage he reckons he would consider buying another one when the time comes to upgrade, and knowing how bloody fussy he is I reckon that is saying something.
