Sway bar disconnectors - 4 or 2 ?
Submitted: Wednesday, Feb 05, 2003 at 17:38
Beddo
Disconnectors for swaybars - do you need to puchase a pair for the front & back or is one disconnector pin only required. I hope I'm right but disconnecting one side would make the sway bar fully unoperational or would this pose strains on one side? Plus it is more expensive to buy 4 !

Truckster
replied: You would be smarter to buy 4...
if you only undo 1 side you only gain benefit of one side stretching the extra length...
Anyway they come in pairs... 2 for front 2 for back...

Thanks Truckster - thought that maybe the case, but I heard someone say just undoing one side of your sway bar did the trick. Fella at local 4WD place (has all 4 disconnectors) says on his nissan he had to tie one sway bar up as it knocked against his diff when disconnected !

replied: Beddo,
1st check what restricts the
suspension
movement. If it is only the tension on the sway bar then you may be better off only buying 2 disconnects, so then the other side will hold the sway bar. It the links or the swaybar actually stops the
suspension
travelling to its maximum droop due to the geometry of the system, then you will need 4 disconnects. Check it out first, depending on what you drive you may only need 2.

Thanks Slunnie, I'll jack her up and see how the disconnection of one side effects the travel on both sides. I drive a Toyota Surf 185, which has the Prado chassis &
suspension
setup, Cheers Beddo

No worries Beddo, if its an IFS Surf you will probably only use 1 disconnect at the front. Not sure about the rear.
