Hilux fuel economy

Graham

On a recent trip to the N.T. in our 3.0 l Turbo diesel(Moderately loaded), the absolute best fuel economy we got was 21 M.P.G. This was highway cruising at 100 KPH.
I would be interested to hear from other Hilux owners of their MPG, as I thought this was a pretty ordinary result.

Graham, (I am not a Hilux owner,......but.......) were you towing a trailer with you? As a bit of a comparison, my 2.8 Rodeo gets a good 30 MPG at 110 kph, towing knocks it back to about 24 MPG. Also my Rodeo is intercooled as well.
Also if 21 MPG was the best milage, what was the worst?

Thanks for the feedback, No trailer, but I do have a metal canopy fitted to the standard cab chassis tray which might effect drag. The worst was 18 MPG on the Stuart Hwy. doing about 120 kph.(unlimited speed limit went to my head)

Fitted hi- clones before i left ,did not alter fuel consumption but increased power.The bigger the engine , fuel consumption must suffer.I think the hi lux should have stayed with smaller motor.

Graham. I own a 3.0L diesel Hilux minus the turbo. Last year I travelled down the west coast and throughout the Kimberly. The trip was a bit over 22000kms and I used 2413L of fuel for the trip. This included some very slow going on rough and sandy roads and tracks. Most of the time I sat on about 90kph because that is where the maximum torque for the engine is. Usually at home I get around the 10Litres/100kms mark (28mpg), sometimes better sometime a little less. I did however notice the fuel economy increase around the 35000-40000km mark but I have never got 21mpg. Hope this helps, Darren.
