Which Off Road Trailer Brakes?
Submitted: Thursday, Apr 03, 2003 at 19:49
Cobes
Hi all,
I'm looking to add brakes to my Cub Trailer.
At the moment i'm looking at having Electric brakes fitted but I am unsure whether to go for the discs or drum?
Any advise would be greatley appreciated including what I should expect to pay and which brake unit is best suited.
Thanks
Chris.

Electric brakes are far more robust and give nowhwere near the problems of hydraulic brakes.
I have not seen hydraulic brakes fitted to any current production trailer poptop offroad camper full size caravan for years. Just been to a caravan and
camping
show and all electric brakes fitted. You have been given a real bad steer by somebody.

replied: Hi Chris,
The Alko trailer brakes are pretty good for lightweight trailers and seem to have become pretty much the "norm" for most offroad campertrailers.
There are recent discussion on this subject on the Campertrailers group on Yahoo. There is a lot of info on the subject there.

replied: Cobes, I have just fitted electric brakes to my off road camper.
Bought "Alko" elec' drum set up and paid an extra $100 for off road magnets(worth the extra money) fitting them was a breeze and they work fantastic Total all up cost was around $ 480
If you are close by you are welcome to have a look at them.

replied: Hi All,
Thanks for all of the input and information.
I have decided to go for the Electric Drum brakes with the larger magnets.
Thanks to all those that responded to my question.
Cheers
Chris.
