12V hairdryer

Submitted: Thursday, Sep 20, 2001 at 00:00

Maree

I know you're all going to laugh but I'll ask anyway. We want to go bush camping with a couple of friends but the female half will not travel without a hairdyer. Apart from this one stipulation she is happy to go anywhere. In the interests of getting on the road, or off it as the case may be, does anyone know of a hairdryer that can be run off a 12V fitting. And I suppose, if we do find one, I could borrow it from her sometimes. My husband says no such being exists.

My sister-in-law uses a hairdryer when they're out bush - she got it from Carac's Dandenong Caravan Accessories store 03 9794 7977 in Victoria, so they're definitely available.

Maree,
I did see a few different 12v hairdryers at a recent 4WD & Camping show. Try one of the larger 4WD accesory stores or camping stores in your area. Nothing in the Adventure shop?

Col - with all the advice I'm sure to be able to find something. I'll head off to all the stores next weekend. Also will call the number in Melbourne that Annie supplied to see if I can find the name of a supplier. Thanks. Maree

Two possibiities present themselves:

1) Buy a 12v hairdryer - check the Waeco website as they supply all sorts of diferent 12 appliances including coffee makers etc.

2) Buy an inverter. These cost about $55 from most camping and 4WD stores and will plug into a 12v outlet (eg cigarette lighter) and run a normal 240v hairdryer.

I would go for the second as you can run other 240v appliances as well. Be wary of the power drain if you only have the one batery though.

Thanks Joe - I did see a converter like this today but as we only have one battery this could be a problem. I really appreciate all the help everyone has given. Mare

Hi Maree, I can't give any advice on 12 volt hairdryers, but gas powered hair styling wands are readily available from electrical stores. They use a little disposable gas cartridge, and apparently they work quite well. These might be worth checking out. Regards.

Maree, Whitworths boating stores sell a nice compact 12v Hair dryer which is not expensive. We use one. You will need to be careful of the drain on your electrical circut and in particular your fuses. I have fitted separate a lighter socket with a 30 amp fuse. Whitworths also sell sockets and fuse blocks.

Greg.

Thanks for the advice. It was originally a query for a friend travelling with us and since she is not going to do so anymore, thank goodness I don't need to worry any more. I appreciate all the helpful advice from everyone though and hopefully other people may benefit.

Thanks
Maree

My friend has decided against the hairdryer after all that - due to power concerns. I have however found where they can be ordered on the internet together with lots of other 12 volt goodies. For anyone interested:
