Camping Showers

Submitted: Wednesday, Oct 10, 2001 at 00:00

Alex

On a recent trip across the Simson Desert our party realised that 5 days was to long without a shower. Has any one built a portable hot water shower to take camping? cheers.....

I reckon the simple/cheap canvas bag shower is great. Theyare now available with a tap rather than simply
screwing the rose in or out.Tthis can waste a lot of water if you happen to completly remove the rose.

I have a canvas bag type and I agree they are great *if* there is a tree nearby to hang them from. A bit of a problem in the Simpson though!

Very good point.
Perhaps a tall and close friend could hold it for you. While there they could hold the soap and
shampoo and perhaps your towel as well. The possibilities are endless.

Working on the "tall" theme would assume then that the men in the party would never get to have a shower.

I've solved the problem Maree. Simply dig a hole 30-50cm deep, the bloke can stand in the hole which has
been lined with a tarp to retain the water.
The shorter members of the party can then hold the shower bucket.
Simple!
Plus you can use the water to wash the dishes .

Blackie - very ingenious. You're a good lateral thinker, I can see. Especially the point about using after for the dishes.

We have found that a small 12v boat bilge pump with extension to a shower nozzle works great simply heat water put it into bucket and go for it. I do like the suggestion about someone holding it for you but with this setup you can hold it yourself if need be.

Alex,

There is a company called Glind (based I think in Nerang near the Gold Coast) who manufacture a shower that heats the water and pumps it out over you. The heat comes from a heat exchange built into you 4WD's cooling system and you hang the shower rose from the bonnet lip.

Enjoy.

The GLINDS hot water shower is fantastic, i've had one fitted to my patrol now for about 3 years, the temperature is fully adjustable from cold to hot, i also use it for filling up buckets, getting hot water for the washing up for the dirty dishes, instead of having to boil the billy, there contact details are as follows: unit 1/213 First avenue, or PO Box 191, Bribie island, Qld. 4507 ph 07 3408 4941 Fax 07 3408 4251 or visit there website at :www.glind.com.au

There is a company in Cairns that produce a free standing, self contained, LPG powered shower. All you need is some water and a LPG cylinder. I think it retails for around $400. The Glind car based showers are also a good option.

Check your local camping store. I saw a unit here in WA recently and the cost was about$20 - $30 complete. It plugs into the ciggy lighter.

we have just returned from a 4 week outback trip and used a battery operated shower from k-mart. it cost about $30 uses 4 d-cells with a hand held shower rose and gives a great shower. it comes with its own collapsible plastic bucket and hooks to hang up the rose. this unit provided showers for 4 people and never missed a beat. a kettle of hot water in a bucket full of cold gives you a warm 5 minute shower.it comes in its own carry case and is the best thing we've bought in a long time.

I agree. We have had one for over 12 months and it is still using the original batteries. The only thing to watch out for is the collapsible bag.....IT DOES COLLAPSE WITHOUT WARNING if it is not hung up somewhere. Match the shower to a portable shower tent and your staying clean.
We get 2-3 people per bag and it certainly beats the alternative of staying dirty.

Mark C/Patrick - does this product have a name. I've looked in K Mart and couldn't find anything similar. It sounds pretty handy.

Marie - The shower is sold is a plastic brief case and available at K-Mart in their camping section. It is called 'Mountain Green - Shower on the go' and sells for $37.99. That was the price I saw at the Arana Hills K-Mart last night. If you cant find one on the shelves ask at the counter to order one. The best part of camping is being able to have a hot shower at the end of the day. Of all the things we have bought over the years, this rates a special mention.

Patrick - Thanks for all the assistance with this. The local K-Mart got some in and I picked my very own up yesterday. Haven't tried it out yet, seemed a silly idea to stand out in the rain in Sydney yesterday and have a shower. Maybe next weekend.

You;re right though, a hot shower is a must. I recently visited Dunns Swamp in the Wollemi National Park and the place is gorgeous but as with most national parks there are no shower facilities. I think that will be my first port of call. All I need now is a shower tent so that I don't have to shower in the dark.

Hi Marie - Keep and eye on the K-Mart catalogues as they often have extremely good specials on shower tents. We picked ours up for about $49 and have used it often. Can be a bit fidderly if only one person assembles it. Something else to think about buying is a mat for the shower floor as there is nothing worse than standing in the dirt while trying to get clean. We bought a hall runner from Clarke Rubber which has a plastic weave which lets the water get through and away. Make sure that you allow for about 2 metres in length so that when you leave the tent you are still on a clean surface. Happy camping.

Patrick - thank you very much for all the advice. I really appreciate it. I saw a shower tent on the weekend and thought 'don't forget a mat' but I didn't think of getting a bigger one which is a great idea. I have just posted a question in relation to shower tents and which one people found best. I know I can just go out and buy any one but everyone has so much good information and experience that it's great to be able to take advantage of their advice.
