Nissan 2.7 turbo diesel - won't idle after replacing fuel filter

Submitted: Saturday, May 03, 2003 at 21:54

Stevo

I have just bought a Nissan Terrano (Pathfinder) 1994 2.7L turbo diesel (auto trans), which appeared to be running well and decided to replace the fuel and air filters, bought from Repco.
Since replacing the filters, the engine will not idle without my foot on the accelerator. The engine cuts out when coasting.
At lower revs, white smoke is apparent at the exhaust.
I tried re-installing the old air filter - no change.
When I replaced the fuel filter, I purged the air by using the manual push pump, then re-attached the outlet hose. I have checked for leaks and confirmed all hoses etc are secure.
Any insight to my problem would be most welcome..........cheers

Steve sounds like you still have air in the system.
Try undoing the injector lines at the injectors then turn over or if you can get it to idle then crack the injector lines one by one and let them leak a bit, you may see a buble or two in the infected line.
Cheers

Thanks Tony,

That worked - all is well now, must have been air trapped in the system as you mentioned.
Once again thanks.

I found on rodeos, that when you replace the filter, ensure the new filter is already full of diesel, then pump the purge pump. After starting, rapidly pump the purge while idling, Works every time ( less mess and time) Cheers, Brad

be careful pre filling filters you are putting unfiltered fuel straight into the injector pump, big no-no
