Hi all , I have a few concerns about the after market safari turbo on my 98 mod 100 ser L/C when I tow my van which is about 1500 kg it just don't seem to have the power that I was told it should have ( especially up hills ) I bought the 4B with 110,000km on the clock and it had the turbo and intercooler on it now I have about 230,000km and I have noticed some grime and oil residue around the pipes which I have been told is normal so just to ease my mind I took off all the pipes and cleaned them so I can monitor just how fast it might oil up the other thing is that on those hills it starts running hot , now this may be due to my driving but I'm not sure ? I also went to a diesel turbo place here in SYD and the guy said Yeah mate I already know what's wrong you have to modify your pump take the top off and replace it with a one that can adjust the fuel delivery through the rev ranges ?? as your motor was not built for a turbo so it has a stock pump ,$2200 then he said I should service the injectors $590 and adjust the tappets $300 and that should do the trick ???
( GUYS IM STRESSING OUT HERE !) as I have to tow my van to Queensland in October and I'm spending a week on Fraser ..not with the van , and I'm a bit worried about The car giving me dramas , so if anyone can help me figure out this problem or advise me/ steer me in some direction I'm all ears .

I am no mechanic and I am technically challenged at the best of times but recently I had an issue with my 80 Series 1HZ with after market turbo - it had lost power and was driving as if it didn't have the turbo fitted.

I had it dyno tuned and it turned out that my fuel pump had died big time and needed replacing - cost me about $1800 for a whole new pump (incld labour etc).

With your injectors they do need to be serviced (checked) regularly - about every 100 000 km from memory - to ensure that they are operating correctly. From your post I think you are about 20 000 km over due.

IMHO if you are going to do the pump you should also do the injectors at the sametime while they are working in that area.

I would also suggest that you shop around and get some quotes in regards to the work - unfortunately I am in Perth and can not help you but if I recall correctly there were two places in Syd - one at Whetherill Park and the other in the Southern Highlands that had good reputations.

Why are you asking a forum? Wouldn't you take the vehicle to another mechanic for a second opinion? Seems to me the mechaninc knows what he's talking anbt, so what is the issue?

Are you worried he's trying to rip you off, or are you affraid you'll have more problems after he fixes the fuel pump, etc?

If it were me I'd take the mechanic's advice and get it done.

You will find many of these pumps lose pressure and die before 300000klms
$2200 sounds a lot to modify the pump,I would expect a full rebuild at that price.

Some shops have been selling the earlir model 1HZ fule pumps new for under $2000,but I dont think they will fit yours.

Maybe do the injectors 1st if they haven't been done for a while and see what kind of improvement it gets.

Mate if you do the pump, you have to do the injectors as well if they havn't been done for a while as the higher pressure in the pump will cause a dribbling injector to oxy a hole thru a piston over time. Happened to a mate.
Probably wouldn't hurt to get the radiator professionally cleaned to deal with the towing requirements and warmer weather in QLD.

JB with 230 kms on it, the pump will be oput of callibration. To do it right, yes an aneroid is needed, but a simple 700 refurbish would suffice in the mean time.....i strongly suggest you take a drive to Cooma Diseasal...at Fishwick ACT

Hi all , thanks for your replies and to wiz YES one concern is that he is ripping me off because when I spoke to a couple of mechanics that I know well ,they said it sounded a bit suss and also no mechanics seem to really have allot of confidence on the subject of turbos as I was bounced around a fair bit and my neighbour just happened to use him when the pump on his patrol gave him trouble and he also was not Impressed with them so this is why I'm asking all you guys whom some have had experience with this topic for advice as some of these guys have told me to do the injectors which I think will be top of my list as for tappets well I have a good mate that just happens to work as a mechanic at the local toyo dealers and he said if they are not noisy leave them alone ,which brings me back to the pump and what I should do about modifying it ? well thanx once again for you guys that gave me some helpfull advice and if anyone can add to this Im all ears .
