its a great article however i think that for the sake of complexity i wonder if it is just as simple to take the genny and fire it up. the new models are so quiet, small sized and lightweight.

Umm,
maybe it's like the genny, so small it can't be seen, but the "quiet" can be measured... often, unfortunately, by the amount of 'damage' done to the offending owners camp site :-((

Generator will work when & where you want it, on cloudy days, in the shade, at night.
Recently, I was all packed up ready to leave a campsite in the
Vic High Country
, I went to start the vehicle to hook up the camper trailer, flat as a poo carters hat!
Ignition had ben on
accessories
with the fan running on low & the a/c clutch on.
Solar panel would have done me no good at all!
As it was, I had the vehicle started in under 30 minutes.

Shaker, you say-> " Solar panel would have done me no good at all!

Can I ask why a solar panel would not work in that condition ?
Was in during the night that you were attempting to start the vehicle ?
Yes, it's a genuine question and no disrespect intended !!
After all you had a genny and a flat battery too.

typical DC caravan wiring link
It shows the 'smart charger' is wired via the fuse box with 6mm, 50 Amp wire. . .
does anyone know what size 'fuse' is used ??
