Hi all. We're just starting out, about to take 3 mths off (May-July) doing part of WA and NT (if we get that far in the time we have). Total newbies and a family of 5 - kids 11 down to 4. It seems from all we've read that the 2 vehicles of choice - we're towing a Jayco Swan - for off road in particular and outback in general, would be the Nissan Patrol (cheaper) and the Toyota Landcruiser, both diesel. We will probably sell the thing on our return (unless Julia falls in love with camping and the vehicle itself), as it seems wasteful to use such a specialised vehicle for dropping the kids off at school and doing the shopping. Given the price difference, is there any reason we shouldn't go with a Nissan Patrol, and if a Patrol, what recommendations around the 35K? Many thanks in advance, Michael and Julia.

G'Day,

We are also travelling in May for 14 weeks - long service leave. Kids are 11, 9, 7 & 5. We purchased a 2003 GU (fuel guzzling 5 speed semi-auto 4.8 petrol, but work pays 1 tank a week - not my fault it's 136ltrs!). We wanted an auto and most responses on the forum made us stay away from the 3ltr diesel auto in the Patrols (4.2 is manual only).
We have a standard 2001 Jayco Hawk that I'm lifting via under slinging the axle. Total cost was $32k Patrol, $14k for van + $5k for accessories.
Good luck and see you in Darwin!

Hi,
I have a Patrol 2003 litres turbo diesel been around Australia twice in it 2004 and again 2005 I must say I am very happy with the Patrol I have it is a 5 speed manual was very good on fuel, we had it loaded up to the hilt inside and also a roof rack loaded up, we got 11 litres per 100 kilometres.
