Question qbout HF Radio
Submitted: Wednesday, Jan 02, 2002 at 00:00
Karin
Hi there!
We just arrived in
Sydney
with our imported car. We now want to go inlands but we don't know yet how we can activate our
HF radio
. We brought one in from Belgium, but what channels can we use, do we need a
membership
, and also where can we buy a second hand (or new?) HF antenne.
The links maked under
UHF radio
on this site doesn't work, so don't know who to contact.
Could someone give me some information about this?! Thanks!

replied: Karin, welcome and happy travelling. I am sure you will enjoy our wonderful outback. Contact members of the VKS737 radio network,( they have a comprehensive web site), they should be able to give you all the assistance you need regarding which channels to install in your radio, or if it is suitable for our networks. If you were in Adelaide, 'Electric Bug' would be able to fix your problem, I'm sure there is an equivilent outlet in
Sydney
. Happy trails, Mike.

Going to the dealers and talking to people is great. But you have to operate the set yourself.
It is very easy . Looks a bit strange the first time. It took me 2 hours and everyone on the VKS737 frequencies was there to help me as a newbie. VKS737 is the cheapest and the best. (Anyway the Telstra HF network is finishing the 27 Feb 2002 so they gone).
Then try your set and specially understand how HF works by going to
http://www.ips.gov.au/asfc/java/toolbox/toolbox.html
You'll see a map of
Australia
. Double click on the left on GRAFEX (wait until it loads) - Draw with your mouse a square around
Australia
and follow instruction below the map. It will send you colored prediction for free. IPS - GRAFEX is an free Prediction service by the Australian governement.
Only experience and training will give you knowledge. HF is better than SATellite phones because they can produce physical help. Try contacting VKS737 around 6pm on channel2 ,8022 Mhz. you'll be amazed of the range of your HF.
