Handheld UHF radio?
Submitted: Wednesday, Jan 03, 2001 at 00:00

As we need to purchase a
UHF radio
, we are wondering if we should get a mobile one (one with two handsets) instead as we could use that also when we’re out of the car (hiking, biking etc…). Does anyone have comments, suggestions? Any brands we should look for?

replied: Bart and Marjan we recently purchased two Icom 40S UHF Handheld CBs with scanner for much the same reasons as youselves. I have since found an adaptor which allows me to hook one up to the cigarette lighter to recharge batteries and an antenna on the roof to boost range. I'm pleased with them - bought from Mobile
Communications
in Brisbane.

I have had several types of uhf radios in my 4x4s and have recently purchased and fitted a GME Electrophone TX3400 40ch transceiver with the remote mount facility. Fitting same to my GU Patrol which was an easy job not having to drill any holes etc. I also purchased a second unit, a Uniden UHO40XR Transciever Handheld which is powered by 3 AA alkaline rechargable batts which can be charged by an adapter from the vehicle or from a seperate charger. One can also use normal throw away alk aa batts. This unit is easy on batts but only has arange of approx 3klms. As i instruct in 4x4 with our club I find it extremely usefull. The added advantage is at camp when I do a little wander the others can contact me easily.
Both these units are reliable and neither are real costly. The first about $450 and the handheld about $100.
Cheers Rog.
