driving lights for sahara

Submitted: Thursday, Jan 01, 2004 at 09:19

mudman2

hi ...

i am taking delivery of a new sahara next week and i am hoping for a bit of advice regarding suitable driving \ spot lights

i'm having an ARB sahara winch bar fitted prior to delivery and the HIR infrared halogen replacement globes fitted to the headlights

i was considering fitting IFP lights but after having read a couple of threads here on IPF lights i'm not so sure anymore

i do quite a bit of outback \ bush \ night driving and would welcome any advice as to type, performance and cost ...

thanks

steve

I've had a pair of Hella Rallye 2000's for donkey's years but I'm not familiar with the 4000's.

What's the main difference ... size, performance or both??

Same size, better quality of light, more sturdy, and a great adjustment/alignment system. ( i used to have Rallye 2000s too!)

FYI there is a good review of driving lights in the current 4wd Monthly.

I thnk that they retail at around the $250 mark each, but, as with all 4wd stuff, there's room to barter. I think I paid a little under $400 for the pair + $30 for the clear covers. That was about 18 months ago.

saw a new pair on ebay for $395, dont know how this compares to the shop price.
(i am not the seller). I have the rally 1000's but need to upgrade or stick a big bull light inbetween them as they are good but not quite bright enough for me.

Mudman,

If you can afford a new Sahara, then go for the best lights in the business.
Hella Predators. They maybe expensive, but the light they give out is so much whiter and brighter then standard halogen lights. Plus they are only 35watts each, so very little current draw. I have a pair on my Cruiser and would never go back to a halogen light.

Last time I heard they were about $1600 a pr...

You dont need Predators, there are lights out there that are good for $400 pr.

Lightforce 240's are good.

You havent even driven the car yet, why not give the headlights a chance first, then see if you need $2000 worth of spotties, or $400, or just some 181s for the side of the road a little..

Truckster...

thanks for the info.. i currently have a 2001 105 GXL and the lighting on it was terrible as standard so i figure the sahara won't be much different..

i fitted IPF HIR globes to the headlights on the 105 and was very impressed with their performance but i found that they were lacking a bit when in the outback....

so i figured that i'd try to get some decent lighting onboard before i took delivery of the new one...

i have heard a lot of good things about the Lightforce 240's, is there any known problem with the physical size of them blocking the airflow to the radiator ??

that's an interesting point that they have a life expectancy of 2 years especially for the money .... i don't mind paying for quality because i believe that you get what you pay for but i would have expected a lot more than 2 years...

and thae Hella's leaking water is a bit of worry as well.. anyone else had that problem ???

sort of puts the Lifghtfore 240's 'in a better light' so to speak...

jtb,

I dont know where you got your info from. As there is no filament in the globes, they have a service life of about 2,500 hours, 50 time more than a halogen globe. Plus the casing is not plastic, unlike lightforce spotties. I have only had mine on for about a year now, but in July did a Simpson trip, and the corrugations where pretty bad, and had now problems with them.

I forgot to say that mine were second hand when I got them, and they were the first model of predators on the market. Not sure when they first came out, but guessing between 4 to 5 years.

Muddy,
If you are going to be doing some outback driving, then you can't have too much light. I really doubt if the Predators only last 2 years, Stolzy might be able to confirm this.

2 Predators, @ 35W each, are equivalent of 4 Hella 4000's, @ 100W each. They also share the same robust body, and excellent mounting system. Hella also make the Rallye 1000 in a HID light, @ about $750, but if they have the plastic body, they are not too robust. Haven't seen any water in the 4000's on our wagon, even after swimming a couple of creeks!!

Lightforce make an HID in 240 size, which are "only" about $1200 each. KC Hilites also make an HID but don't know anything about it.

Opposite Lock supply an HID upgrade kit for Hella 4000's and few other lights using the H1 globe, price about $1200, but not sure if that's each, or a pair.

While the HIR infra-red globes might be good, a headlight wiring loom upgrade will make a lot of difference. Get them from ARB, or Piranha.

When you consider the cost of the new Sahara, a pair of the better lights is only going to add 4-5% to that total. Read the article in latest 4WD Monthly, good review that shows the good and not so good - Lightforce 240 won, with Hella 4000, 2nd.

Enjoy and safe driving,

Muddy,

Magazine says the L'force 240's are about $248 each rrp. Seems dear, as I know Truckster got a bulk deal last year on some, might have been 8 or 10 pairs, for around $350 pr. Think you might have to shop around.

The 240's that won the comparison, were the Halogen globed units, 240 XGT. The same magazine is having an HID comparo, next month. The above comparo is in Feb edition, so if they don't stuff up, the HID will be March.
The mag said 4000's were $260 each!!

Hi Mudman2
Light force 240 would be my choice
1 They are fitted with a breather similar to a diff breather
2 Tough as nails - can't remember who it was end for ended there comp 4WD
& one of the things left intact was the Lightforce 240.
3 They have clip on adjustable diffusers
4 Try www.offroad.com.au and check there reviews and the shop for prices
