ANYONE WANT TO RAISE MONEY FOR CANCER BY GOING CAMPING?

Submitted: Tuesday, Apr 15, 2008 at 19:19
Hello fellow members

I'm leaving from Cape York 5th May and bushwalking 6,000km to Wilsons Prom to raise $1M for The Cancer Council. I've called it THE GREAT AUSTRALIAN CANCER BUSH WALK. The website www.thegreatcancerwalk.com.au has all the details about what we are doing and how we are doing it.

Whilst the walking itself appears the greatest challenge, it has in fact become only half of the story. You see, what started as an idea to have a 4x4 towing an off road camper trailer forming the vehicle support for myself has become an epic in itself.

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS TO DRIVE OUR SUPPORT VEHICLE AND ENJOY A CAMPER TRAILER TRIP AT THE SAME TIME.

As I write, the car and trailer are on a truck bound for Cairns. It has been a real challenge but the vehicle has left Melbourne as a pretty well equipped support vehicle. Getting the car and trailer ready is again only part of the challenge. A huge challenge has been the finding of drivers to drive it.

I have been on radio, in newspapers, magazines and even TV trying to find people who love camping/ touring to come along and drive the 4x4 and meet me at designated points along the Cape York Rd, the Bicentennial National Trail and AAWT. Success has been limited despite the assitance of the Q'lnd,NSW & Vic 4WD Associations sending info out to all their clubs. I appreciate the need for people to work but I never thought it would be so difficult to find people available to take a holiday!

At present I have found just a few volunteers, with one bloke doing some very long stints of several months at a time.

To all members, you are very welcome to visit the website www.thegreatcancerwalk.com.au and please feel free to tell others about it.

In the short term, if any members are in a position to offer assistance by way of being a support driver for a few weeks please contact myself or through the website. There are no catches other than you need to get yourself to and from the start of your chosen section and smile when media turn up from time to time. Oh, and put up with my wingeing about blisters etc
Cheers,
Michael Mitchell
