The Perfect Pilbara....!!
Submitted: Monday, Jun 30, 2008 at 20:04
some more diesel money.!!
a creek crossing sth of marble bar
After our last journal entry, quite a bit has happened, so just trying to jolt the memory a bit. We left Karijini, Nat Park, and headed for the Marble Bar area, the hottest town in
Australia
.!! BUT when we had arrived the rain had set in , and was with us for the next 3 days. The roads were shut , and we decided to stay in close to town and check out the local sites, like the Marble Bar pool , and the Chinamans pool.
The local van park (which is for sale) was very nice and shady, and plenty of green grass to camp on, which was slightly different to what we had been used to.!! after getting our bearings a bit more, we headed out to some local detecting spots to try our luck, and it took some days before we got our first bits of
Pilbara
gold. The ground here is much different, with most of the areas being covered by spinifex, making swinging a coil very difficult.
The roads here weren't actually too bad after the rain, and the local grader driver has been doing a great job in re-trimming them into fine shape again. He certainly is a terrific operator. We got access onto a station 100k's Sth of Marble bar and tried our luck there, and the scenery just doesn't stop amazing us. We spent 4 gorgeous days out there all by ourselves, in some quite remote locations, and just enjoyed every minute of it. After calling back in to let the station owners know we were leaving, our whole trip took a different turn for us!! It looks like we are going to be working there for the next couple of months, which will be very very exciting for us, and we have hardly slept a wink after hearing the news. they run 14,000 head of cattle, and muster with choppers, and the whole experience will be just amazing, so we have decided to give it a go.
The owners are lovely people, and the rest of the crew are very nice as well, just like a big family. Our net srvice will be limited, so we will be in touch on EO when possible to put updates on. thanks to those words of encouragement so far also from others EO members, on our journey as it does get lonely sometimes out there on our own. We have also sold our home (camper trailer) to a new very keen owner now in Port headland, and I'm sure it will get plenty of use, and it has been our very comfortable homenow for nearly 5 mths.
After our turn on the station, we will go into another caravan, for more permanent travelling. Anyway, we must pack now for tomorrow, we are in the luxury of a nice cosy van park cabin tonight, and having chinese for tea for a real treat after 5 mths
on the road
. Take care to all, and will kep you posted, Unc & Jodie

In 2005 we arrived in Marble Bar hot and and with a thick layer of pilbara dust over everything. The c'van park was like an oasis and the cold beer at the pub went down very well. Surprised to hear the caravan park is for sale. Ingrid was a very friendly and welcoming host. What a wonderful experience you're having. I'm green with envy.

Hello Uncle & Jodie, I really enjoy reading your reports and it seems to be going well. That's great news about working on the cattle station! What an experience for you that will be. When we travelled around the Pilbara we were constantly amazed by its beauty and your descriptions, photos and words bring it all back. Good luck to you both and I hope we catch up again one day. We head off for our trip on the 8th August.
