Not that one.

THE Rock. About 50km SW of Wagga.

Mr Eight-Year-Old and I spent most of today out in the bush climbing up the south ridge of the sandstone and shale outcrop the Aboriginals knew as Kengal. The summit is 364m above the surrounding plain.

The Rock was first spotted by Charles Sturt in 1829 and led to settlement of the area by 1847. For a long time it was known as "Hanging Rock" until a landslide in 1874 removed a large rock overhang.

We saw a wedge-tailed eagle, a pair of red-tailed black cockatoos and plenty of black Swamp Wallabies.

The view from the top is normally terrific but a haze in the air today stopped us seeing the Snowy Mtns. You can however make out another reserve to the West, Galore Hill.

The walk is not difficult, a little over 2 hours for the 6km return journey from a great picnic area where, unfortunately, camping is not allowed.
