Livingstone National Park NSW
Submitted: Saturday, May 17, 2008 at 20:34
Spent Saturday in Livingstone National Park, 30km south of Wagga Wagga.
Myself and Mr 8 drove in from the North along Wrigley's Road past the Sporting Shooters Range and into the Northern access road. We've had a bit of rain in Wagga and it was a bit muddy here but still plenty of traction.
Followed Link Track up to Skyline Track which runs along the spine of the Park on the ridge line with occasional views through the trees of extensive farmland to the North and South.
Skyline Track has a rocky base and was easy going. There is evidence here and there of mountain bikers who love this neck of the woods. At just just under 2000 hectares, this park protects the only available example of South-West Slopes tall shrubland forest on public land in NSW.
It contains important habitat for numerous woodland bird species, as well as squirrel and sugar gliders. We didn't see any of them but did catch sight of wallabies and some eastern grey kangaroos.
Turned into Grass Tree Track which runs along the catchment of Long Creek and was a bit more muddy down in the gully but soon rises to the junction with McRae's Track on the border of the Park. We used to know this area as Burrandana State Forest but now it's managed by NPWS out of Tumut.
The track heads downhill through a gate to arrive at the Burrandana Hall and tennis courts.
This is a wonderful day trip from Wagga and a great opportunity to show the kids some of the bush!
