 Description of Rufus River & Lookout

A small shelter shed, with seating overlooking Lake Victoria, which was first discovered and named by Joseph Hawdon on the 4th March 1838. Also near this area, there were fatal confrontations with Overlanders and local Aboriginal people and on the 26th and the 27th August 1841 it ended tragically with the deaths of 35 Aboriginal people.

Also while looking out into the large body of water in Lake Victoria, spare a thought for 6 RAAF Airman that lost their lives while training in this area during World War 11 and to this day, 2 Airman and their Aircraft life hidden beneath the Lakebed of Lake Victoria.

For modern day visitors to the Lake Victoria/ Rufus River area, there are two areas at which camping is permitted. At the Rufus River campsite (near Lake Victoria), water, shade and toilets are provided. The Murray River site is ’bush camping’ only.
