 Description

Warraweena Private Conservation Park lies 540km north of Adelaide in the Flinders Ranges. It is accessible by sealed road as far as the Beltana Roadhouse which in turn can be accessed through Port Augusta, Quorn or Jamestown, Orroroo and Hawker on the road to Marree and the Oodnadatta Track. From the roadhouse it is an easy run for 9km along a gravel road to the historic town of Beltana and then 26km along a station track to the homestead. On the way you pass by the ruins of the Sliding Rock Copper Mine. There are some very nice camping areas, some of which are quite difficult to access by 4x4. In many places low range gears are required to get to the destination.

This track, which is only 35km in length, takes the visitor along a series of dry creek beds which have to be negotiated with extreme care. Magnificent eucalypts are scattered through this part of the trek. After 15km the climb along a series of ridge tops and saddles begins over rocky terrain with Spinifex clubs and Yucca Grass Trees dotted along the steep slopes. The trek culminates at the top of Mount Gill, 914m above sea level. The track to Mt Gill is the second highest in the Flinders Ranges.

 Things to See & Do

Rugged terrain, breathtaking scenery, bushwalking, bird watching, four-wheel-driving, camping and sightseeing

 Environment

The valleys of Warraweena are mainly covered by native pines, wattles, eucalypts, Spinifex clubs, Yucca Grass Trees and other tall shrubs with saltbush and grasslands on the flat around Sliding Rock. Other important flora species may be found whilst hiking high up on Mt Hack. The property lies within the Adelaide Geosyncline, a belt of ancient folded sedimentary rock stretching far inland from Kangaroo Island

Yellow footed rock wallabies inhabit the ranges while grey kangaroos, euros and emus abound. There are many skinks and lizards to be seen including the red-barred dragon which features on the logo of Warraweena.

 History

An interesting history underlies the natural beauty and serenity of the place. Warraweena was inhabited by the Adnyamathanha people until 1855 when the land became part of a very large pastoral lease. Until this time the presence of people had very little impact on the landscape of the Flinders Ranges. Over the years the property was cut up into smaller holdings and in the end sheep farming in this area became unviable. In 1996 after it was de-stocked Wetlands and Wildlife bought the lease and has managed it as a private conservation park since then.
