ExplorOz has rated the difficulty of each trek. We’ve factored in difficulty of driving conditions together with remoteness to give some indication of what to expect. Here’s how it works…
- indicates that this trek is predominantly tar and a 4WD is generally not required. These treks are usually based around cities or towns and are by no means remote. Good weekenders. Suitable for caravans and trailers unless specifically noted otherwise.
- indicates some off-road requirement. 4WD is handy but not always necessary. Generally suitable for caravans and trailers unless specifically noted otherwise. These treks are not generally difficult and help/supplies are not far away.
– indicates the use of high or low range 4WD will be necessary, OR that the location is a significant distance from a town which impacts on range of fuel/water/supplies you will need to carry as well as your level of personal preparation such as communications equipment, lack of powered camp sites and so on. At this rating, we advise significant caution for trailers and caravans. These treks usually involve some bush camping, sand driving, single tyre tracks, mud, small river crossings, hill climbs, corrugations or ruts. However, some treks with this rating are not on difficult terrain but are rated at this level due to the remoteness of the trek, the unpredictability of road conditions (particularly after rain) and the extra preparation required.
– best suited to large, high clearance 4WD vehicles only. Not recommended for caravans and possibly unsuitable for most trailers. These treks are for the experienced 4WDriver who should be well equipped with all recovery gear, communications equipment, long-range fuel & water.
–  extremely remote with regular use of high and low range 4WD, not suitable for caravans and difficult for trailers (check for specific recommendations). Must be totally self-sufficient with all supplies, equipment, spares and at least one in your party should carry emergency communications such as HF radio, or a satellite phone. Beware of extremes of weather and unpredictable track conditions. These treks are the final frontiers of Australia's offroad environment.
