This trek begins in Strahan on the South West Coast of Tasmania and traverses some of the lesser known routes taking in Corinna and Granville Harbour as part of a tour to Cradle Mountain before heading northwards to Hellyer Gorge and Wynyard.

Most people travel to Strahan for a ferry ride to Sarah Island and the well known Gordon River. Although a ferry trip is definitely a good start, there are other things to see in Strahan. It is a pretty, tourist friendly town. Whilst in Strahan, there are a couple of side trips that are worthwhile.

One of these is a visit to Macquarie Heads. At the end of an average gravel road you'll find a great little campground run by a local caretaker for a minimal fee. While the facilities maybe not be great, the Heads is a great spot for fishing, great views and 4wd access to the beach. Macquarie Heads is 14kms from Strahan.
With a 4WD you may also like to travel along the beach from Macquarie Heads up to Ocean Beach and return to Strahan.

From Strahan, travel 46kms to Zeehan on sealed road. (A short detour to Henty Dunes is between Strahan and Zeehan.) From Zeehan you have a couple of options of ways in which to head towards Cradle Mountain. The lesser known route is detailed here. Take the signs to Corinna. Its 26km from Zeehan to the turn-off to Granville Harbour (optional stop on this trek). Head out to the coast at Granville Harbour for a worthwhile drive (extra 20kms return on a good gravel road). The wild west coast is worth seeing even if just to appreciate how few spots there are for boats to take shelter on this side of Tasmania and how difficult it would've been for our early explorers.

Back on the sealed road, it’s a further 10kms to the turn-off to Corinna. The 12kms of gravel road to Corinna is a pretty drive and takes you to the Pieman River. Corinna is on the opposite bank of the river and the only way to get vehicles across is by the Pieman River Punt. $11 will get a standard vehicle across ($16.50 for combined/larger vehicles). Corinna itself is a pretty little spot with a couple of riverside walks or alternatively, a cruise down the Pieman River.

A few kms north of Corinna, the road comes to a junction. If you have the time, people recommend the unsealed (and fairly corrugated from what we’ve heard) road along the west coast to Arthur River. If you’re a bit short on time or just sick of corrugations (!), then head towards Savage River. This gravel road continues through a pretty rainforest and climbs to a windy road across a fairly dry landscape that offers good views of the Meredith Ranges. The 26kms of good gravel road from Corinna ends at Savage River, a small mining town. The sealed road continues to wind its way for another 43 kms to the main road (A10) to Wynyard.

From the main road, head south and after 16kms, you’ll see the turn off to Cradle Mountain. From here, it’s 26kms of sealed road to the turn-off to the Information Centre and the campground/accommodation for Cradle Mountain. Most of the walks at Cradle Mountain are done from the Dove Lake car park that is another 10kms down from the campground. While Cradle Mountain is very touristy, there are some excellent walks and its worth a visit.

After you’ve had enough of walking, travel back to the A10 and head north to Wynyard. You will need to turn-off back towards Savage River, but then take the road signposted to Hellyer Gorge. This is a good sealed road and about 25kms along it, you come to the Hellyer Gorge picnic ground, which is also a good spot for camping. While not spectacular, the Gorge is a good lunch stop and walk along the river. It is approx another 20kms onto Wynyard and the north coast, and the end of this trek.
